Coletti Institute Press Release
March 27, 2013
Congratulations to Virginia for Its Commitment to School Accountability
Coletti Institute congratulates Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell for his strength and ALL STUDENTS initiatives—a broad package of education reform to improve student learning.
On Friday, March 22, 2013, the Governor signed into legislation the “Educator Fairness Act,” which requires annual evaluations of educators based on student learning, requires performance to be considered when making teacher layoffs, allows school boards to extend teacher probationary periods from three to five years, and ensures that underperforming teachers can be dismissed based on their unsatisfactory evaluations.
McDonnell signed Virginia’s new A-F school grading system that will simplify the existing accountability system through easy-to-understand A, B, C, D and F labels. Instead of using only static student achievement data, the grading system will incorporate student-learning gains, which is a first in Virginia. This allows schools to be highlighted for making progress even though they have some struggling students. And, he signed the “Strategic Compensation Fund,” which creates competitive grants for districts that design incentive pay programs aimed at improving student achievement.
The Coletti Institute applauds Governor McDonnell for all of his hard work and dedication to the future of public education. We ask that the Governor next signs into law, literacy legislation so that all teachers are deeply knowledgeable and skillful in reading development and reading literacy instruction, so that all students are grade level reading and writing “proficient.”
