We can all agree that one of the best parts of Halloween are the movies about Halloween, of course! Sure, we have our kid-friendly Halloween movies that can be fun for everyone to watch! But if we really want to get down to business, we have our classic Halloween movies, and even absolutely terrifying Halloween movies, like the Halloween franchise! We're talking Michael Myers and all of his gory antics!

Die-hard fans of the infamous serial killer might know that the series is made up of 13 movies (including one released last year!). That number might seem overwhelming to those less familiar with the set of films. But not to worry—we've curated a guide on how exactly you should watch the Halloween movies. To much surprise, it isn't in order of when the films were released. 😱 (You didn't think it would be that easy, did you?)

The Halloween movies go back to 1978, following Michael Myers in his adolescent years (basically his murderous origin story), where his first victims are introduced. The terror that follows has led to many twists, murders, and spinoffs in storylines—all featuring the masked slayer. If you’re new to the Halloween series, this can get a bit confusing. Which is precisely the reason why we created this list of the best order to watch each and every Halloween movie.

So, grab your popcorn—and Halloween treats—and keep reading for directions on how to make the most of this slasher favorite.

The first film in the Halloween franchise is indeed the one you should start with! It centers around Michael Myers and the origin of his wrongdoings. It starts with him fatally attacking his sister at just six years old, his 15-year-long mental health facility visit, and his eventual escape—which then turns into a vengeance-fueled escapade, leading to none other than Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) fighting for her life.

Laurie might have escaped Michael's first attack, but she'd be delusional to think he was simply going to give up. Though, she probably didn't expect him to pay a visit to her in the hospital while she was trying to heal from what he did to her. Laurie is relentless, and is able to make an escape one again—this time finding out what the motive for Michael's slain-attempts are... the two are related!
