At this point, most of us can say we've recovered from the heartbreaking news that Yellowstone is coming to an end. It still hurts, but it became easier to accept knowing that the Dutton's story isn't over just yet. Yellowstone may cease after season 5 part 2, but we've still got a lot to uncover, which has us feeling more grateful than ever.

After some long months of grueling behind-the-scenes drama, piles of rumors, and various statements about Yellowstone ending—anything regarding the future of our favorite Western show just isn't as transparent as we'd like it to be. So, we'll just go ahead and lay out all the information we know, and hopefully clear up anything you may be wondering about Yellowstone, including details on why there won't be a season 6.

Yellowstone will end after Season 5 part 2.

We'll start with the basics.

Claims that the show could be ending after season 5 had been floating around for some time. In fact, Deadline was the first to report on this back in February, essentially solidifying the rumors of disagreements between Yellowstone show runner Taylor Sheridan and leading actor Kevin Costner regarding the show's filming schedule. (For reference, Costner was working on a multiple-part Western film series, Horizon: An American Saga, that caused the scheduling conflict.)

At this point, no one was sure what the future would hold. That is, until, we officially got word that Yellowstone would be ending with season 5 part 2 and a new spinoff series would continue with the Dutton family story. However, the new series won't be led by Kevin Costner, but instead is said to be starring Matthew McConaughey.

Taylor Sheridan addressed the situation once and for all.

He didn't hold back, either.

When touching on Costner's sudden exit from the series in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan said that he's disappointed, but his opinions of Costner as an actor hasn't changed. And he made sure to let everyone know that his portrayal of John Dutton was nothing short of "symbolic and powerful."

In addressing the upcoming spinoff series starring McConaughey, Sheridan said: “He seems like a natural fit."
